Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood? Cavities can cause pain and affect a child’s speech development and self-confidence. The good news is that tooth decay is largely preventable, and healthy dental habits started early can set children up for a lifetime of good oral health. Read on for tips on preventing cavities in children.
Choose Healthy Foods and Drinks
Eating healthy, nutritious foods and drinking water will reduce the possibility of developing cavities.
- Choose meals that include daily servings of fruits and vegetables
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals
- Encourage drinking water throughout the day
Brush and Floss Every Day
Daily brushing and flossing remove plaque, the bacteria that cause cavities. Children usually need help brushing until about ages 6–8.
Tips for healthy brushing:
- Brush twice a day for 2 minutes
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
- Floss once daily as soon as teeth touch

Fluoride Protects Teeth
Fluoride is a safe and effective way to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities by strengthening tooth enamel and protecting teeth from plaque and acids. Fluoride is found in toothpaste and many community water supplies.
Check out the American Dental Association’s FAQs on fluoride.
If you have questions or concerns about fluoride, your dental team is happy to talk with you and recommend options that work best for your child.
Dental Sealants Add Extra Protection
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They can help prevent cavities before they start, especially in children who are at higher risk for tooth decay.
When Should Children See a Dentist?
Children should see a dentist by the time their first tooth appears, usually around 6 months of age. Early visits help children feel comfortable at the dentist and allow providers to catch problems early — before they become painful or costly.
